Our 2018 travel story started in Death Valley National park. We were chasing the Moon shadows looking for a place to shoot the Milky Way. In the Spring Andalusia enchanted us by its grand cathedrals, and dreamlike Alhambra Palace that seems came from the pages of Arabian Nights book. Summer was about vampires and werewolves that avoided us by all means. And the Fall was the prickliest season in vast and hot Arizona Desert.
On the grassy shores of the Pacific Ocean in Southern California lies a small town of Carlsbad, famous for the Flower Fields or, as they are also called – the fields of Colors and Dreams. Every spring from March to May, countless colorful ranunculus bloom here.
Lviv could very well set the world record by the sheer number of magnificent lions on its picturesque streets. The city was established in the mid-13th century by King Danylo Halytskyi, who named it after his beloved son Lev, which in Ukrainian means “Lion”. Since then, many lions have occupied Lviv. They are pretty much everywhere.
Today Amsterdam looks like it did in the 1600s, on old Dutch paintings – clouds blown past high gabled houses, churches, and bridges reflected in quiet canals. How many stories the city can tell, like aged seamen who is full of tales, that are not always proper in a good society… As many travelers before we start the walk at the Central Station that resembles art museum. It sits at what was the harbor entrance, where gally sailors debarked from the ships and were met by ladies with red lanterns.
Another year comes to the end. As I’m ready to flip the last page of the calendar, it’s tempting to look back and reflect on our adventures of the past year. Our 2017 travel story began in Nevada Valley of Fire State Park. Frankly speaking, it was Christmas 2016 but I count adventures from Christmas to Christmas. I remember sitting in our RV and listening to the wind howling through the red rocks and to a rain drumroll. The biblical storm passed through usually dry Nevada desert and colored rock formations dark crimson.
Our journey to the American Wild West, to the place where Hollywood Westerns were filmed, where cowboys and Indians chased each other, and the bandits plundered post coaches. Why go to India, the Middle East, the Gobi Desert, Africa or fly to other planets, if they were created in Alabama Hills – a couple of hours from the bustling and crowded Hollywood. We spent only two days there, but I wanted to stay for a week, take a walk among the bizarre rocks, admire the rugged beauty of the desert. And, maybe, to hike the 14,496 mountain peak, which snow cap picturesquely accentuates the yellow stones of Alabama Hills.
“Ten days in London,” I anticipated and began to compile a list of everything that needs to be seen. Gradually, the list grew longer and longer and was infiltrated by some sights that are beyond London. Our journey to England was conceived before our fall trip. As a warm-up, we visited most British city of America – Victoria, British Columbia and I ordered few dresses in Marks and Spencer in London. Also, a lot of British sitcoms and history series were watched at home. Finally, when Labor day holiday was approaching we made a move.
